Our story…
Many years ago when Spicymonkey was a young chimp he was often found in the kitchen making biscuits, puddings, weird sandwiches and apple pie with far too much cinnamon. Later he worked in Italian and French restaurants and became more interested in different styles of cooking. Later still, he pretended to attend Bradford University while sampling many amazing curries for a few years. This led on to a year of wandering around India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia where he was lucky enough to sample more amazing curry. He spent time with cooks, he learned how to make types of curry he’d never heard of. He even had a go at spear fishing (with no success). Most importantly, he got the travel and food bug.
Some years later he had visited many more places including Yunnan, Sichuan, Japan, Morocco and most countries in the Americas. It made Spicymonkey realise that cooking superb, authentic, tasty, spicy food was what he really wanted to do. Spicymonkey the business was born in 2008.
Originally the business plan was simple. It was to fund a wedding and a year long trip around South America with wifeymonkey. Upon our return Spicymonkey got busy developing all the recipes for the amazing sauces you find in our range today. We’re confident that all that time, travel and research has resulted in the delicious products you find here now. We never envisaged how popular Spicymonkey would become and so all these years later, now with our mini-monkeys, we have continued to do things the way we always have – it seems to work. In 2019 we spent 8 months in Central and North America. Although not typically “curry” areas, we refreshed ourselves with new ideas and a better plan going forward.
It’s a huge satisfaction that Indians buy our curry, that Jamaicans love our curry, that people from Myanmaar or even Indonesia are surprised by how delicious our curry is. Also that so many people become regular customers, thank you all.
Apart from the obvious cooking, curry and travel interests here at Spicymonkey Towers, there is one more glaringly obvious obsession, and that is MONKEYS!
We often joke about “Going to the jungle” when we’re away for a holiday. In reality, it’s not always a joke. Part of our trip to South America was to spend a good chunk of time at IntiWaraYassi in the Bolivian Amazon rainforest. This sanctuary helps rehabilitate animals that have been kept in zoos, circuses, hotels etc. by giving them a more natural environment in which to live. Occasionally some animals are able to eventually live in a semi-free state, roaming around the jungle. We have visited other monkey sanctuaries around the world (China, Japan, Bolivia, Belize, Costa Rica) and it is an absolute privilege (and life time ambition achieved!) to be involved in this process and we continue to support organisations that help our furry cousins in similar ways.
Quite simply, every curry sauce we sell, contributes in some way to monkeys being helped live more natural lives in the jungles in which they belong. So thank you for being a part of that too.
